  • Co-Funding:  £1.82m

  • Town Investment Plan Projects delivered
  • Build experience gained for Somerset

Key Project Themes

  • Deliver Enabling Project

Rationale

  • In Glastonbury there are over 120 people living on the roadside and off-grid in caravans – all in non-regularised areas which creates social, health, traffic congestion and economic challenges for a small town

Project Summary

A new site will be created for non-bricks-and-mortar dwellers in Glastonbury.

The edge-of-town area known as Beckery area is currently being used as an unofficial base for communities of travellers and other off-grid dwellers.  Much of this area will be regenerated thanks to the Glastonbury Town Deal funding.  The local councils are working closely with the non-bricks-and-mortar communities to provide them with a suitable alternative site.

The new site will provide sustainable temporary and long-term solutions to meet the accommodation needs and improve the living conditions for off-grid dwellers in Glastonbury. This should generate a positive impact on the physical and mental health of both bricks-and-mortar and non-bricks-and-mortar residents in the town.

The overall aim is to improve the situation for roadside dwellers and enable the development of a site that provides both temporary and permanent provision, in consultation with the relevant communities.

This project previously contained an element to address phosphate mitigation in the vicinity of the Glastonbury Town Deal projects. This element is no longer part of the enabling project as solutions are not yet available, plus it is now recognised that the phosphate mitigation does not apply to commercial developments.
